January Facts on the Fence: Cultivating Conversations for Social Change
This month’s Facts on the Fence asks two big questions that encourage people to think more about social justice. The first question is “What do you think is the greatest need in the world?” and the second question is “Who encourages you to do good?” Many organizations, initiatives, and social movements have taken place in order to respond to the many needs that we are faced with as a society, but our opinion of what exactly is the greatest need varies widely because everyone has their individual experience and journey that provides them with a unique lens of their own.
The second question is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who himself was probably inspired by many people to speak up and take action the way he did. Similar to Dr. King’s push for acceptance the questions are asked not only in English, but in Cantonese, Punjabi, and Spanish to allow the diverse group of people in the Bridgeport neighborhood to read the display to the best of their abilities. We encourage you to also meditate on these questions and talk about them with friends, family members, and co-workers and see where the conversation might take you.
